  • 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion
1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion
In the Roman Catholic Church first sacraments (Confession and Eucharist) may be celebrated once the baptized Catholic child reaches age 7.  If a child has not been baptized Catholic by the age of 7 a different preparation process, called RCIC, is required (there is a different form for RCIC sign-up).  There are specific preparation requirements and deadlines which must be met in order to receive first sacraments. The sacraments themselves are typically celebrated each year during the spring at a date and time coordinated by the parish based on the availability of the priest.
    • 1st Reconciliation & 1st Holy Communion

Preparation for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion is for children in the 2nd grade.

The preparation process is parent-led, and parish supported. The resource we will provide families is called Blessed. This resource gives parents the tools they need to navigate the journey of faith their family will embark upon as their children prepare to receive the sacraments.

To support parents as they witness to their children in preparing them to receive the sacraments, the parish will offer monthly 1st Sacramental Prep Gatherings and Family Gatherings in the Hospitality Center, as well as a Retreat before receiving each sacrament.

1st Sacramental Prep Gatherings will be on the 4th Tuesday of each month, from 6-7:30PM in the Hospitality Center. These gatherings are for children preparing for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion and their parents. Children will have a chance to connect with their peers while parents gather with the Coordinator of Religious Education to discuss their children's process through the preparation journey.

Family Gatherings will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 6-7:30pm. The gatherings will begin with a simple meal and will feature something for the entire family.
      • A nursery will be available for infants. (Availability depends on adult volunteers. If you know of anyone who would like to help in the nursery, please let us know!)
      • Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) will be available for children ages 3-6 years old.
      • Children in 1st through 5th grade will break into age-specific groups.
      • 2nd graders preparing for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion will break into their own group for Sacramental Prep.
      • Youth in 6th through 12th grade will participate in youth group.
      • High school students preparing for Confirmation will meet with their group for Confirmation Prep.
      • Parents will gather for their own fellowship and learning facilitated by the Director of Faith Formation. Through authentic discussion about the application of Catholic teachings, parents will help one another become great witnesses of faith for their children.

Retreats for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Holy Communion will also be a required part of the preparation journey. The retreats will occur the weekend prior to the reception of each respective sacrament. The retreats will be a combined effort between St. Thomas and St. Pius X, however, the reception of each sacrament will occur at the parishioner's home parish.
